Tides and Navigation for Sea Kayakers, 23rd and 30th September

I thought the new intake of sea kayakers, and maybe some of the not-so-new, might be interested in 2 training sessions on tides and basic navigation respectively. I used to teach this stuff to yachtsmen in a previous life. This would be 2 illustrated talks on the Tuesday evenings, 6.0 p.m., of 23rd and 30th September, in the main (downstairs) clubroom / bar. I plan to connect my PowerPoint to the resident TV set.The sessions will be:
1. Tides for Sea Kayakers, including: Causes, Tidal Cycles, Height and Range, Streams, Tide-associated Hazards, Tidal Offsets and Tidal Planning.
2. Navigation for Sea Kayakers, including: Maps and Charts, Position Fixing, Speed and Distance, Bearings, Course-to-steer and Passage Plans.
Each session will be about 90 minutes.
There should be space for all.

  • Hi David

There is a projector in the cupboard in the committee room. This is a prompt for me to get it wired in ready for courses.
  • Hi David,
I'd be interested in this please!
    Thanks
    Rachel
  • Sounds good to me

Best book the Northcott... I'd like to attend as well. Richard.

Edit: Sorry should have included one of these ☺
  • Gosh, great to see so much interest. Looks like 12 folk so far. Where / what is the 'Northcott'? How do I book it?
    David
  • The Northcott is Exeter's theatre...
Suggestion for a larger group is to use the clubroom and start the course at say 6pm or 6.30pm. You can link a laptop course straight into the tv.
  • I'd like to come too, if there's still a place.Thanks, Jacqui
  • Hi David,
I would also like to attend if there is space…
    Thanks,
    Matt
  • Looking like taking over the club room!
  • i would love to but shall be away then will there be another chance
  • Myself and Jan would like to attend the first session please.
  • I'd love to attend too (both evening if there are places still available).
  • I would like to attend the second evening if possible 30th september
  • I am surprised, pleased and not a little intimidated by the interest in these sessions! In view of the demand the venue has shifted to the downstairs bar and I will attempt to feed my PowerPoint through the TV. This means the start-time has had to be advanced to 6.0 p.m.
    Thanks
    David
  • Steve, now you are making me nervous - I am relying on your tidal planning for us to hit a small outcrop of granite in the middle of the Bristol channel on Saturday called Lundy. If we miss it, we have a longer paddle which ends in southern Ireland. Should I pack my passport just in case?
  • Unfortunately, due to work getting in the way, Jan and I can no longer make it this evening. A shame as it sounds really interesting!
  • Thank you David, lots of new stuff and lots to learn....
