Explore the Jurassic Coast By Sea Kayak - Sunday 9th & 16th August

I was walking along Sidmouth Seafront today and it occurred to me that we very rarely go east from Exmouth. Whilst Rock hopping opportunities are very limited it is a world famous coast with amazing geology and great ice cream. I plan to put on a series of trips from Budleigh Salterton to Lyme Regis. We can do them as a series of circuits to avoid car shuttles.
Trip 1 Budleigh to Sidmouth Rtn - Sunday 9th August
Trip 2 Sidmouth to Branscombe Rtn
Trip 3 Brnscome to Lyme Rtn

Launching from these beaches will always be a challenge if we have swell from the South or East and so each trip will be conditional on the launching and landing conditions. These will be relatively easy but interesting paddles so suitable for anyone who has paddled previously on the sea. There are car parks close to each launch spot and cafe opportunities for lunch.

The first two target dates will be the 9th & 16th August. Further dates to follow after the Falmouth weekend.

Please let me know in the chat if this trip is of interest.

Rich Bennett will now lead this trip and confirm the final details.

  • Hi Owen. I’d be interested to join on the 9th as I’ve not paddled much of this section of coast past ladram. If numbers are low we could potentially arrange a shuttle and cover a longer section.
  • Hi Owen,

I would be keen and am available for the 16th - this date is mentioned on another thread, so not sure whether one or two trips will happen that day?

  • What a great idea. I will be away so I cannot join you.
  • Lewis. I can’t see the other trip in the 16th. I would prefer to not overlap. Which thread are you referring to?
Laura - it might take a few sessions to work our way along this section of coast. Also due to the challenges of launching and landing on the steep beaches each section will be swell dependant. As such keep watching this space.
  • I might have made it up!
  • I will join! Haven't done that bit for a while now.

  • Hi hopefully can join trip on the 9th will confirm Tuesday

  • I'll join you this Sunday please

  • Yes for this Sunday.

Hi Owen I’m on the sea Kayack award with Jane and would like to come. I’ve been on the sea before and would love to come in the 9th
  • I'd like to come along. A coupe of the paddlers from the SK award skills group are likely to sign up as well.

  • Hello, I’d love to join this Sunday (9th).
I’m from janes SK group and haven’t gone out on the sea yet. What would I need to pack?
  • I’d like to come
  • The weather conditions are currently looking good for this trip. Unfortunately I have some family priorities up in the North West this weekend and so Rich Bennett has kindly agreed to take over the leadership of this trip. Rich will confirm the final launch details and timings. I will post dates for the second and third legs in the coming weeks when the sea conditions allow for launching from the beaches in Sidmouth and Branscombe.
  • Hi I would like to come along on Sunday 9th

  • Hi All. By my count we have 10 people paddling on Sunday, 2 of which are qualified leaders with 1 aspirant leader. Unless anyone drops out, the trip is now full.

I’ll check the forecast later in the week but it currently looks ok to launch from budleigh.
  • Hi just confirming can make it hope that’s ok

  • Hi Stuart- yes, I included you in the count.
  • Thanks Rich looking forward forward to it

  • Do we have a meet time and location?
  • Weather looks good for Sunday and flat enough to launch from Budleigh. Meet at Lime Kiln Car park in Budleigh Salterton at 9am. Aiming to be ready to launch by 9:30.

Please lift share where possible to reduce the number of Cars involved.

If you have not paddled on the sea before please refer to the link that Jane has posted above which gives you an idea what to bring.
  • If you are meeting at the club please be there at 8am. I can take two extras.

Sorry - last minute - but I would like to join tomorrow I will see you at Budleigh - update - I hadn't noticed that the trip is full, so will drop out

  • Is the 16th August trip going ahead?
  • Emily. We will need to monitor the weather during the week to ensure that we are ok to launch from the steep beaches. The forecast should be reliable by Wednesday so will confirm then. It looks positive 7 days out.
