December Pool Sessions 2023

Hi All,

We are offering our winter break Pool Sessions, they will be held at St Luke's Pool and will last 1 hour, this includes arrival and departure. Each session can occupy 12 members across 6 boats.

These sessions will be focusing on learning and or improving our roll, and suitable for paddlers that are already comfortable capsizing and pulling their spray deck.

Coaches will be standing in the pool or at the pool side, guiding paddles and helping boats upright if needed.
The boats will be at St Luke's for us to use, so please don't bring your own and keep your accessories to a minimum. Own Paddles and spray decks are OK, if cleaned thoroughly.

If you would like to familiarise yourself with the techniques beforehand, there are plenty of videos available on the 'tinternet',

Please note this event is for members only, and we will be following British Canoeing guidance at all times.

I am wondering if this would be possible for someone on the older creaky side? I do not want to take up a space if this is likely to be a fruitless task!

  • Laura - you will be fine!

  • Laura I have been trying to do this for a while and it is really all about technique. Once you "get it" it's a fab feeling. I am still practicing it though as can only do it one way and one side and so I don't feel ready to do it in cold water and in earnest yet!

  • Yes Laura, this is defiantly for you and all who wish learn, perfect or de-rust.. As Shelley says, it really seems more about technique and being comfortable upside down :)

  • I wish that I could help coach, but I will be in Yorkshire

  • Hi Duncan. We're (Rob and I) half there but have a car issue. Hoping we'll still make it, but don't wait for us. If we are late I'll run in to collect a permit
  • Thanks Anna, I believe you made it in time. see you tomorrow :)

  • A big thank you to Duncan for organising and all the coaches for their help, support and perseverance... It is much appreciated

  • You can roll! You Can roll!
  • Hi again, sadly Rob and I won't make it today as both fighting colds 😔. Thanks for organising, these sessions have been great.
  • Are these sessions continuing into Jan/feb 2024?

  • The club St Lukes sessions have finished for now but there might be a chance of another during Feb half term? Duncan can answer that.
There are still the external sessions at Dawlish on Fridays that a few people have been going along to and have been positive about. It's a bigger pool and you can take a boat of your choice (subject to lots of washing.)

  • Hi Willembliss, Sadly the pool sessions have gone, maybe some more for Easter :) However as Tom mentioned, Dawlish poll is available on Friday nights with coaching available. I will be attending this Friday, if anyone is interested in joining me..
