Achieving the Sheltered Water SUP Award - now full

I'd like to offer the opportunity for club members to achieve their Sheltered Water SUP award. This award is aimed at those who are already paddling SUP at approximately explore level. The award is designed to give you the ability to organise and carry out an enjoyable and safe trip on the water up to 200 metres from shore, up to force 3 in winds. The award requirements can be found here: https://britishcanoeingawarding.org.uk/wp-content/files/01112018BCABSUPShelteredWaterAwardV1-1Nov21.pdf.

Like the Sea Kayak Award the Sheltered Water SUP Award can be achieved through continuous assessment so I'm going to try to provide some sessions for people to work towards this award between now and my departure. This will also be dependent on the weather as some skills require assessment in force 3 winds and there is clearly an upper limit to the wind we can paddle SUPs in.

As a starting point I'll run two sessions on Tuesday evening's, one on the 19th September and one on the 26th September.
To provide more time to demonstrate skills I can also run a session on either Sunday 24th September or Sunday 1st October.

Please could you post below to let me know if you are interested in achieving the Sheltered Water SUP Award and whether you are available to paddle on either Sunday 24th September or Sunday 1st October.

If you have any other questions about the award please do come and talk to me on Tuesday evenings.

Susan

  • Hi Susan, I'd be interested in attending if there's space ...I didn't make it on any courses this summer so if there are people more competent/ who did the courses happy to step aside!

  • Hi Susan, speaking to you yesterday about the course, I would like to give it a go. Thank you.
  • Hi Susan, I'd really like to do this one too. I can do Tuesday's now August is out of the way and the Sunday's mentioned. Thanks

  • Hi Emma is having trouble logging in to the forum so has asked me to say she wants to do this. She is free on the 24th September

  • So it appears that there is a harbour festival taking place in Exeter on the 24th. Would people be happy to travel to Totnes?
  • yes happy to travel to Totnes and transport people from Exeter.

  • I've added my interpretation of the skills list (see above).

Looking at the weather forecast, conditions may be marginal this Tuesday so if the wind speed doesn't decrease we may stay off the water and cover some of the additional skills (see above).

  • I could transfer to Totnes.
Very happy with land based session tonight if too windy, feeling tired after covid booster yesterday.
Will bring wet kit in case we are on water.
  • Unfortunately wind speeds are still too high tomorrow (24 September) for SUP sheltered water.

I'll post some more potential dates soon.
  • Potential dates and locations weather permitting:

    7th or 8th October Totnes
    15th October Exeter
    21st or 22nd October Totnes

Please could you let me know what works for you.

i can only do the 7th and 22nd due to the instructor course (8 + 15)and other commitments (21) but feel free to go ahead on the other dates if that suits everyone better :)

  • I should be able to do 15th and 21st.
Feel the same as Lucy about you pressing on when you get the weather and I will catch up one day.
  • I am happy with all the dates Susan.
Just checking if paddling will go ahead tonight?
  • I can do 15th and 22nd?

  • HI Gill. Yes we'll look at towing tonight. Trying out the techniques we discussed last week.
  • 7th or 8th October Totnes - yes
    15th October Exeter - yes
21st - No because I am doing a sailing course
    22nd October - yes

  • I'm happy to run sessions on 15th and 22nd October. I think that will provide everyone with at least one opportunity - weather permitting.

15th October we will paddle from the club (due to the tides)- meet at the club house at 09:30
22nd October we will paddle from Totnes - meeting at 09:30 at Totnes (feel free to use this thread to arrange car shares)

Please come prepared to get wet on both days. We'll try to stay dry until after lunch.
Please also bring lunch and a drink as well as clothes appropriate for the weather.
You can either borrow a club SUP and paddle or bring your own. I'll bring the club slings and waist leashes.

Due to the lack of light there will be no more coaching on Tuesday nights but if you have insurance and want to go for a social paddle please just remember a set of lights.

  • Hi Susan 22nd sounds good to me !
  • is something happening this weekend i.e. 7th or 8th?
BTW I have completed core coach and thinking about SUP coach training on the 28th/29th October here in Exeter. Does anyone else want to do this?

  • I'm not running anything this weekend 7th 8th.
  • Thanks! Might jump on something else then :-)

  • I am in for 15th. Can't make 22nd
  • 15th October. Winds are likely to be less than required for the SUP sheltered water award on Sunday. I'm happy to run a general SUP paddle from the club if people would still like to paddle.
  • Oh no! Always too much or too little.
There's a family birthday outing I should be part of if we can't do award.
A paddle on the sea would give me a tough decision!
  • Thanks Susan for the offer of a paddle on the canal. As there seems to be no one else interested, I will give it a miss. Myself and Ros took our SUP’s to the Warren on Tuesday and practiced getting in and out of the water in different ways. It gave us an insight as to the best ways for each of us, tall and short to get back on. We also did a bit of rescuing.
Hope all going well with your move.
  • Hi Susan, I spent 3hrs Friday doing a paddle up and down the canal with winds of around 15mph. Windy enough for us (myself, Liz and Elena) to need to kneel for some bits. Liz practiced getting back on the board and we all practiced paddling backwards. Also, lying down to get under the bridge as the water was so high. We got to double locks and back and had a good time!

As there is no wind would you consider a trip to the sea somewhere? Otherwise if it is just on the canal I think I will give it a miss also as next week I am doing sailing on the Saturday and SUP on the Sunday so staying at home Sunday will boost my childcare brownie points this weekend in preparation for next weekend.

  • OK as I've woken up with a bad cough I am going to have a quiet day today and rest ready for next weekend.

  • Such a still morning.. ɓeautiful.
We will miss you Will and Susan, thank you for all your help building confidence sitting in and standing on craft. Good luck for your move and future jobs.
