Sunday 29th May - Dynamic Sea Kayaking Day

Update: 27th May

Well, the weather is looking very nice for the weekend. Unfortunately . We'll struggle to find interesting conditions on the South coast, so I suggest we head to North Devon, and visit Morte Point. There is a tide race that forms here, and it's a venue that gives us a lot of options to explore safely.

Let's meet at Lee bay (the one West of Ilfracombe, here) at 10am, or the club at 8am. I'd suggest we consolidate into 3 cars from Exeter if possible (I'm assuming Maggie will go direct, which leaves 7 of us from Exeter). I'm happy to give someone (and boat) a lift.

I will lead a dynamic water sea kayaking day on Sunday 29th May. Details on where and when we'll launch will be decided closer to the time based on the forecast, but I'm opening this up for sign ups now. Initially limited to 4 spaces, but more may be available if some experienced paddlers sign up. With some more experience paddlers, there are now up to 6 spaces.

Paddlers

Leading: James, Jane

  1. Christina
  2. Maggie
  3. Richard
  4. Alan
  5. Kwinten
  6. Martin

Trip is now full

What is dynamic water sea kayaking?

  • Surfing. Sea kayaks can pick up waves earlier than shorter boats or boards, so you can get some lovely clean runs as the waves build towards the shore. Playing in the breaking surf zone is also a fun challenge, especially in a 5m long boat.
  • Tide races. Like surfing, but on a treadmill. You get continuous long runs on waves with lots of energy to push you forwards, but that don't dump like beach surf does. Tide races can get addictive!
  • Down wind runs. Another variation on surfing. With some swell and some wind behind you, the sea forms waves that you can continuously surf downwind.
  • Strong wind paddling. Not for everyone, but there can be something satisfying about fighting into a force 5 head wind. Type 2 fun perhaps. At the very least you'll probably get rewarded with a nice down wind run when you turn around!
  • Rock hopping. With some underlying swell, the rocky areas between the coast and sea become a playground of gaps, gullies and other features. We always aim to pick spots to play with fun features, but minimal consequences.

Who is this for?

You! (If you want it.) You'll need some good paddling foundations, but the club can help you get there. This is for anyone who would like to try out or do more of this sort of paddling, whether it's new to you, or whether you're an experienced sea kayaker.

Before going out in these environments, it's important to have a good foundation of skills, both personal and safety. Everyone in the group needs to be able to help out to make sure the group can perform any rescues quickly and efficiently. Anyone coming on these paddles should therefore:

  • Feel stable and comfortable in your kayak in 1m of swell, a few feet of surf, and up to force 4 winds.
  • Be able to make progress into a force 5 head wind, or against 2 knots of tide.
  • Have a reliable brace/recovery stroke that has been used for real a few times. (A roll isn't necessary, but this would be a good point to start working towards one, or turning your flat water roll into a rough water roll).
  • Be able to perform an efficient deep water rescue of a swimmer in moderate conditions.
  • Be practiced in using a tow line and some tactics that we might use in a rescue situation, like contact tows and anchor tows.

There are plenty of opportunities within the club to work on these skills, such as the Explore Sea Kayaking course, and trips that run throughout the year. If you're not sure if you're at the right level, then get in touch (webmaster@exetercanoeclub.org.uk) and we can have a conversation, or get out for a paddle to see.

Comments

  • I'd like to come please.

  • Yes please
  • I can come, looking forward to it.

  • Me too, if spaces allow.

  • Yes please if there is room.
  • I'm going to try and make this!

  • Thanks everyone. I think we're now at capacity for this trip, so anyone else will have to be a on a reserve list.

  • Yes I'll go direct. Unless anyone wants to pick me up en route on the 377. Well, it's one route, but I appreciate some like to go the long way round on the bigger roads.

I am happy to go via A377 and pick up Maggie, if rest of group can consolidate into two cars with three kayaks on each? I can take three kayaks on van, but with limited parking space at Lee Bay I was minded to take car, in which case I can only manage two kayaks.

  • Actually, after a bit of discussion, let's meet at 10am at Lee bay, or 8am at the club. Sorry for the earlier start but is is in case parking gets tight later on.

  • Confirmed that I have seen the new time and will go to the club for 8am. I'll have my boat plus a MV and LV scorpio on the car. I think we will need to remove the large scorpio. Consequently I am happy to drive.

  • Thanks Richard, I could meet you at Leigh Cross, Leigh Road, which is the turning for Chulmleigh from the 377. Any time is good.
  • I'll come to the club for 8. I can't carry any boats at the mo unfortunately, so an LV boat and a lift would be great please.

  • I'll grab my boat from the storage and come down to the club at 8. I can either get a lift or give a lift, whichever!

  • Christina I can pick you up at 7.45am if you would like.

  • How are we with cars and boats. I can be at the club 7.45 am….
  • Thanks Jane. Much appreciated.

  • Unfortunately looks like I'll need a lift. Car lost its turbo, so I will make it to the club, but don't fancy a slow crawl to the North Coast!

Confirm I will go via A377 and pick Maggie up then to Lee Bay for 10am. Maggie - as per email I will see you 0845 Leigh Cross.

  • I'll be at the club at 8am. I think I can only carry two boats, so would need a lift with someone who can carry 3 boats if we're going to go in 2 cars. We can figure it out at the club!

  • Great day, thank you all, especially James and Jane for expertise and Richard for the lift. Not sure I need a glass of wine to feel a bit unsteady on my feet, but I'm having one anyway.
  • Yes, this was an amazing trip. I learnt so much and had great fun. Thank you!

  • Thank you all, a great day, learnt a lot one was to “keep paddling” !!
  • What a great day. Thank you James for making it happen. One of the best sea kayak coaching days the club has had.
