Cancelled- New Year Sea Kayak Paddle - Saturday 3rd January - Cornwall

A provisional notice that I will lead a paddle on the first Saturday of the new year. Open to anyone who has been paddling on the sea in 2025 and has suitable cold water gear. I am predicting bright blue skies and calm seas so plan to Launch from either Damar Bay or Port Quin. I will review the location nearer the time when I actually have a weather forecast. The trip will only go ahead if the weather is suitable for winter paddling. This location gives us the option of estuary or coastal paddling but as ever the North Coast is weather dependant. Please let me know if you are a possible because numbers will depend on the availability of other leaders.

For update see the weather warning in the thread below. Will confirm the viability of the trip by end of day Thursday with the possibility of moving the trip to the South Coast or running a new trip on the South coast on Sunday.

Sorry folks but this trip no longer looks viable and safe based upon the three day weather forecast. Yesterday we had perfect conditions and I might post some photos later. I am currently looking out to see and the predicted conditions have already landed. The wind and swell is predicted to increase over the next couple of days before hopefully calming down on Sunday. I will post a new trip for Sunday on the South Coast. In any event I still want to say happy new year to all club members.

Ok with Rich, Nigel and Jane we have plenty of safety cover so I am very happy to lift the cap on numbers. In terms of location and plan for the day, this is still dependant on the weather forecast nearer the time. This is a leisure paddle to celebrate the new year so ok for moderate paddlers with experience on the sea.

With the numbers now up to 9 persons I will suggest that we definitely meet at Damar Bay car park. It will be low tide when we launch so trolleys will be helpful. (Parking too hit and miss at Port Quin) I will confirm the exact plan and timings later in the week but can everyone plan to meet at Damar bay for 9.30 with the aim to be on the water for 10.00. For anyone needing a club boat this will probably mean that you need to load boats on Friday evening so you can leave Exeter at 8.00am. I think it will still be cold next weekend so bring hot food or a hot flask if possible. My plan will be to be off the water by 2.30pm latest so maximum of 4 hours paddling with a short lunch stop. For anyone who does not need to rush off I will be serving afternoon tea at 3.00pm!! Please dress for the cold weather. I will post a final passage plan on Thursday when we have the weekend weather forecast so that everyone knows what to expect.

Weather watch. I have just been checking the weather forecast and the three key environmental factors look to be conspiring against us. The wind forecast has picked up to F4 G6 from the North so straight into the Estuary. The swell forecast on the North Coast is now 5-6ft which is beyond the scope of this trip. With Low tide at 11.30 on Saturday our options for estuary and river paddling are limited. I will monitor for 24 hours before making a final call but I think a trip out of the Camel Estuary is unlikely. In view of the interest in the trip, I will start looking at options on the South Coast which looks to be more sheltered.

As stated above the wind and swell forecast means that this trip is no longer viable or safe. I will post a replacement trip on Sunday on a venue TBC on the South Devon Coast. This will be in a new thread.
