River Axe Race - Sunday 22 March 2026

One to pencil in your diaries. This is more akin to a kayaking fun run than a serious race. It is open to all types of kayaks and SUPS. Multiple starts based upon the type of craft you enter with. Jane and I did it this year in sea kayaks and it was great fun. You start in the narrow river close to Colyton and then head down the narrow moving river (not white water) before the estuary opens out and the finish is at Axemouth Sailing Club. Car logistics and lunch all provided by Axe Vale Canoe Club. A plastic boat is advisable because if the river level is low there are a few gravel banks to navigate around in the river. We can sort out transport logistics nearer the time depending on who wants to come. There are no number restrictions for this trip because we will all enter as individuals. This year entry was £10 and this included lunch. And yes Jane beat me by about 90 seconds so I have something to prove.

  • Just bring this back to the top of the chat. A fun morning with lunch provided. The entry is on an individual basis. Paddlers of all abilities can manage this course. You just go at your own pace.
  • I’m booked to do this in a double canoe. See you there.
  • If anyone else is going to do the race, can you let me know as we could arrange to setup cars at the start and finish of the river. Cheers.
  • Jason. Don’t worry about shuttles. You drop your boat at the start and then drop your car at the finishing line. The Axe Vale club organise the return shuttle back to the start line at no cost
  • Thanks Owen for the info.
