Exeter Canoe Club: Paddling from Wednesday 13 May

The canoe club has received advice and information from Exeter Port Authority and British Canoeing. The club now permits paddling on the following basis. Please be aware that this advice may change, and we will keep you informed.

The Government has updated its regulations so that permitted outdoor exercise includes paddling from today, provided you partake alone, with other members of your household, or with one other person from outside your household. You should not use these facilities if you are showing coronavirus symptoms, or if you or any of your household are self-isolating.

Exeter Port Authority has reopened Exeter canal and the Exe Estuary from today.

British Canoeing has updated its guidance and the club now permits paddling provided members follow this guidance:

In addition to the above the club advises:

  • When accessing the club please ensure that you comply with the social distancing requirements, ie stay at least 2 metres apart. Limit the number of people in an aisle in the boat sheds to two at any one time. Don’t dawdle on the landing stages.
  • If you have used club equipment please wipe down the paddles, seats and toggles at the end of your session so that they are clean for the next person. Each boatshed has Gorilla antibacterial wipes to use for the time being.
  • This morning British Canoeing has advised the virus can linger on paddling equipment. For people who have used club equipment please add a luggage label to the boat and paddle when you have finished with it, and wiped it down. This will enable other club members to select an alternative club boat and paddle. Labels and pens will be made available in each boat shed later today.
  • We have requested EWSA to reopen the toilets at the club. When we receive more information, we will send the new number code to paid up members of the club.
  • Please ensure that you have paid your subscription for the current year if you wish to use club facilities. If your income has been affected by the lockdown restrictions so that paying the full subscription has become difficult please email the membership secretary on membership@exetercanoeclub.org.uk and information will be provided on the assistance that the club can offer.
  • The club will not be organising training sessions or coaching or trips at present as this is not yet permitted. Any paddling that you do will be ad hoc paddling and will not be club activity.
  • You will need to have third party insurance in place before you can go paddling from the club. You can obtain this insurance by being a full member of British Canoeing. Some household insurance policies also provide this cover.
