Subject to Covid restrictions, are people interested in doing Foundation Safety and Rescue Training one day in September or October?
Aspiring Coaches need to complete this training and it is an ideal next step for those who have completed the explore course in any discipline (old 2*) or are of a similar standard and can paddle another craft.
This is the best time of the year to do this as the water is still relatively warm, we will all be getting wet as we practice various rescue techniques.
The course is well suited to those who have completed training with the club and can accurately and quickly position their craft where it is needed. We will use a variety of canoes, kayaks and sups. Participants will have the opportunity to try various techniques to establish what works best for them!
Safety = avoiding mishaps
Rescue = dealing with mishaps
6 places will be available on the course and we need 4 for it to be a recognised course. Post here with interest and date availability, September or October are good as the water will still be warm. I can do weekdays or weekends and will run as many courses as are needed to satisfy demand!
This is a BC recognised course.
Once the day is fixed and you all confirm your availability, the course will go ahead in all but the worst weather conditions. You will need to be prepared and dressed to be in and out of the water without getting excessively cold. We will have access to the changing rooms and I will keep as much as I can of the getting wet activity until the end of the day. You should also bring flasks of hot drinks.
You should bring safety related kit you already own or can borrow but don't buy any before the course. I will have a selection of kit for you to use so you can then decide what best suits your needs before asking Santa for help!
There is no charge for the course but there is a BC registration fee of £5 for current British Canoeing members or £10 for non members. You will need to prove your current membership to qualify for the lower fee but I can hold off registration for anyone joining BC at the time.
Of course, any arrangements we make will be subject to any restrictions necessary as a result of the covid situation.
Looking forward to your replies,
From the replies I have on 17 August, it looks like everyone who has shown interest so far wants a weekend day so the first offering will be on either Sunday 5 September or Saturday 18 September. Please all respond again with your preferred date so I can fix it!
My diary has entered a conspiracy to stop me being available on any other weekend day in September but most of October still looks OK....
From the replies I have on 22 August, it looks like
Martin S,
Adrian E, and
Kwinten
are free to attend this course on 5 September and
Pete C is keen to join in as a helper.
Unfortunately, this is not enough participants for the course to run so we need to recruit some more.
Nathan T and
Andy Crawford
Have both indicated preference for a September weekend day but have not responded to the actual days offered.
If we go for 18 September
Rupert seems to be the only taker for this day but there might be others?
So, those already keen for 5th September, please canvass for some more takers on that day so it can go ahead!

Hi Brian, I am very interested. Is it likely to be on a weekend?
I’ve done this before Brian but would like a refresher if there’s space on a date that works for me.
Hi Brian, I am interested but could only do October.
Please all see updated initial post. In spite of interest shown, we are struggling to get enough participants together for this to run in September. I will decide in the light of responses received by Friday 27 August.
Hi All,
With only 4 people booked to attend this training the chances of one dropping out is too high for me to commit to running it. The minimum is 4 participants on the day for it to be considered valid. We will try again in October. Sorry for those who have booked but we will get there!
I'm available every weekend day in October except 9th and 10th.
Hi Brian, Hi All. I'm relatively new here hence why I've not posted before now. Looks like I might still be in time to join this session. I'm currently free on any weekend in October and would love to join. I'll watch this space!
October has arrived! Sorry for the prolonged silence, I have some family matters requiring my attention on unspecified weekend days in October but nothing has crystalised so here goes!
Subject to participant availability I plan to run this training on Sunday 17 October, at the club. We need to start promptly at 9am and will finish around 5pm. It will be a packed day, starting upstairs in the classroom then outdoors for the rest of the day.
There is a fallback/additional date of Saturday 23 October. If 17th doesn't work or is over subscribed the course will move or repeat then.
By all means indicate intent to attend here but booking will be via webcollect where you should pay the relevant BC certification fee. It is £5 for BC members and £10 for those who aren't BC members. Other than that there is no charge for Exeter Canoe Club members. You can only pay the BC member reduced fee if you can provide your in date BC membership number, which may be held on club records anyway.
I,m off to create the event on webcollect now so if you can't find it please wait a while before trying again!
Thanks for your patience.

This is a great response, thank you all who have booked on the course for 17 October. As Penny says above, this course is now full so I have created another for Saturday 23 October on this link:
https://webcollect.org.uk/orgadm/index.php?page=event&action=event.view&event_id=60007
If there is still demand after 23 October is full, I will offer another date, possibly a weekday during half term, subject to demand and availability.
Penny, that's odd! someone else has booked on it. Please try again on webcollect. It might be an issue with the link so maybe try from the courses page? Please let me know how you get on and I'll look at sorting things accordingly.
Andy, shame but maybe someone reading this will be willing to swop with you?
Thanks Kwinten,
There are 4 people booked on the Saturday course so it will go ahead. No need to change your bookings, I know to expect Penny this Sunday instead of you.
Thanks,
