I am at the start of trying still but am keen to come. What kind of boat is best to start and does anyone know of a step by step idiots guide to rolling. Last time I just ended up getting muddled. Any advice welcome.
  • A nice warm pool is an excellent starting point!

Online seakayaking do a step by step video course for SK, costs £10 for a month subscription (actually 5 weeks as there's a 7 day trial period). I'll find you some links to other videos.

For equipment, the key is a snug fitting boat that has good lower body connection - because that's where the turning movement comes from. It doesn't really matter whether it's a short or long boat at the beginning. A good spray deck will help too because water sloshing around is difficult. And a paddle you are used to. It doesn't hurt to learn in a buoyancy aid, because it helps you get closer to the surface. But it's optional. Nose clip or snorkeling mask also make the process easier.

The boat and all equipment must be super clean, and if it's club kit please rinse off the chlorine afterwards.

I hope to come and coach. It can be a bit of a journey, but persistence pays off.
  • Three rolling resources on YouTube.

  • I'd like to come along, please.

  • Thank you Maggie, I remember these from my last series of tries. Obviously now I am older and wiser.....I will bring a short boat I think, and a neoprene deck. I will watch the videos as often as possible. Please could I ask you to bring a magic wand with you?????

  • No wand required. Instead, you bring an "I'll get there" mindset and I'll bring a listening ear so we can break down what was confusing last time! I mean, humility is all good, because we can all struggle with rolls at any stage - roll fade is real. But it's also a head game. You need to believe!

Really sorry but I will have to pull out. My car has developed 2 faults and I cannot get it in the garage before Wednesday. I have been advised not to drive it.
  • @laurahallett Tony is saying he could pick you up. I've sent you an invite to the WhatsApp for the pool. You don't need to join it if you don't want to, but it speeds up communication.
  • I would like to come on Wednesday please. But happy to drop out if there’s too many people.
  • @Maggie_Watson is there a Whatsapp group for this?

  • there is now!

  • Andy I’ve sent you any invite

  • I'll be picking up a SK from the club tomorrow to bring along. I've got room for another person and kayak if anyone needs a lift - let me know.

  • Confirming the pool group for this evening
