Overnight Sea Kayak trip 20/21 April
Hi, would anyone be interested in another overnight camping trip at Sharpham Point?
Unfortunately I've left it a bit late to try and organise it, therefore the only date available that would work with tides is the weekend of the 20 - 21 April.
The site costs £160.00, so before trying to book we need a reasonable amount of people to commit to coming. If you'd like to come please let me know as soon as possible and I'll book the site if still available.
This is a great opportunity to give camping from a sea kayak a go, and the paddling is easy so open to anyone who has basic experience of paddling a sea kayak and some camping kit.
Canoes would also be welcome as long as you can support each other on the water.

The site is booked, so this trip is definitely going ahead. More details nearer the time.
If you're interested in coming and have any questions at all, please post below or I'm usually at the Club on a Tuesday evening.
UPDATE 09/04/2924
So there are 16 of us currently going on this trip. Hopefully there might be an improvement in the weather before then.
Paul, Nigel, Toby, Kathy, Lucy, Jason, Richard, Ellie, Chris, Sammy, Sabine, Laura, Tom, Michael, Dave and Catherine.
Please let me know if you are unable to make it. There is currently space for two more if anyone would like to join.
We will be launching from the small slipway at the end of Priory Street, Kingswear and can park vehicles at the Darthaven Marina, a short walk away. It would be useful to know who plans on driving there directly and who will meet at the club. I would say for those meeting at the club we go for 9.30. So for those going direct meet at Kingwear 10.30 - 11.00. Space for offloading is limited, so we will try and take as few cars as possible from the club and may have to take turns in offloading kit and boats. We have plenty of time to get organised and pack boats, so that will be fine.
High tide is not until 6pm, so won't want to be trying to land at the campsite to early. Unfortunately may have to face a bit of mud when we leave on Sunday, unless we get up very early.
If anyone can bring some fire wood, then we can put in any spare space in boats.
The information and kit list posted by Nigel is definitely worth reading and is a very useful aid for packing.
If anyone has any questions or I've forgotten something let me know. If anyone is short of camping kit let me know, I might have stuff you can borrow.

For those who haven't camped from a sea kayak before, I will do a demonstration of how to pack a kayak on the Quay on a Club night sometime in early April (I will post here closer to the time).
The site is fantastic right on the river with a fire pit! It is close to wild camping but it does have composting toilets!

As evenings get lighter, towards the end of March, I plan to give a demonstration of how I pack my sea kayak for an overnight camp. They are great load carriers!
In the meantime, this a list of what I would consider packing for an overnight trip... (Not everyone would need everything)
OVERNIGHT SEA KAYAK – CAMPING LIST

• Travelling clothes – to and from get out. Can be left in the car.
• Shore clothes – packed in dry bags for when we get to destination.

I am planning to do a demo of how to load a sea kayak for an overnight camp on the Quay, at 6pm on Tuesday 9th April. The plan is to gather outside AS Watersports at 6pm PROMPT!, and I will give a demo, hopefully finishing in time if you are planning to paddle with the Club that evening. It isn't an exact science, and others may have their advice are welcome. People who aren't coming on the Sharpham trip are also welcome.

I am sorry, but due to work comittment, I can't do the demo of how to pack a sea kayak next Tuesday as I will be heading to Wiltshire. Hopefully, the list above will be useful. The key is packing things that you need dry into drybags ( AS Watersports will be able to advise the best ones, but can go elsewhere). Sleeping bags can be double dry bagged, as a night in a wet sleeping bag probably isn't fun! Bulky things like tents can be split into several dry bags - the tent poles can be put up in the front pointy end of the kayak, and flysheet / inner put in separate bags to fit in the hatch. I tend to put all-important wine in 500ml coke bottles that will fit behind the skeg. I put stove / gas in front of the footpegs as there is often a lot of room there, and it isn't critical if it gets damp. The campsite that we will be using has a composting toilet, so we will not need trowels etc and it has a fresh water supply, so you only need some form of bottle to take to your tent. On-shore clothes that you want to keep dry are best in dry bags, distributed around the kayak. Food type is optional. Some people like dried stuff from Camping stores. Short term, I like tinned food - up to you! Worth packing warm / waterproof clothes in dry bags. We will also have group tarps etc and firewood that the leaders may distribute around kayaks depending upon room! There is masses of room in a kayak, but it will be necessary to expell air from bags by kneeling on kit to compress it. Love kayak camping!!!
