Sunday 23 January - Sea Kayak Winter Explorers trip - Aveton Gifford to Hope Cove Updated
The current swell forecast is 0.3m with 5-6 knots of wind so nice conditions for a winter explorers trip. We can follow the tide down the River Avon and continue along the coast.
I will book a taxi shuttle back from Hope Cove to collect cars. It would be helpful to car share so some paddlers can stay with the boats (only do this if you are personally comfortable car sharing).
We need to be in the water no later than 10.00 am to catch the tide so please be at Aveton Gifford by 9.30. There is a free car park by the launch point. If we end up with 6 boats the taxi shuttle should be no more than £5/person.
I am conscious that it is January and so this trip will only go ahead if we have a stable wind forecast with low winds and low to moderate swell. It is winter and so I will do a final weather check on Friday to confirm conditions.
This is a 3 to 4 hour trip and is suitable for all paddlers who have made regular sea trips this year. We will aim to be off the water by 2.30 which should get us back to Exeter for 4.00pm.

Owen, yes please, I have room on my Car for another boat and person (only comfortable if they like us will have done a Lateral Flow test that morning), plus Rachel will be joining but not paddling, so can help with car shuttles.

Happy to drive you. Meet you at the club, on the club side. My boat is there. It would need to be 8am.

Kwinten. We also have Pete and Warren who can’t get on the forum. But you are correct we only need a 6 seater if Rachel wants to do other things with the day. Also to confirm Adrian’s question. Yes Aveton Gifford car and boat park.
All - as we are planning a shuttle, please bring with you a set of warm clothes and ideally a dry bag to put them in. We will need to put the clothes in the kayaks and take them with us to get changed into. Otherwise, the wait for the shuttle will be cold and those travelling in the taxi or car will have to travel in wet clothes. I have a few spare dry bags that I will bring with me just in case people forget. See you in the Aveton Gifford car park.
Nigel I agree, not allowed in car IF WET, though there are roof Bars!!!! You could put then change of clothes in the car if prefer.
I look forward to seeing you all in the morning. As Nigel has already advised please bring dry bags and a change of clothes at the end. Bring your lunch and a hot flask if you have one. It is not freezing tomorrow but a cold night and a max of 7* in the day so we will need to paddle to stay warm. The wind forecast is still light so it should be an easy winters paddle. Please bring all of your normal safety gear and dress to fall in the water even though we hope no one will in these conditions.
