Hi all.
A pal of mine is looking for an extra paddler to join a coached group in Pembrokeshire 15 and 16 August. £240 including camping.

Organised through Sea Kayak Academy (Ant Goddard, Ian Jennings). If one other joins it will be a group of 6 with two coaches (not necessarily both the business owners, but it will be a great ratio). Currently 4 men one woman. All friendly - joining a group is great for expanding your paddling circle. Would suit someone above SK award level. There is some enthusiasm for Ramsey and or Skomer, if feasible.

Please comment, with a contact route, if this is of interest and I will put you in touch.

Excellent supportive atmosphere for anyone from "waves give me the jitters and I can't roll either" all the way to "I need coaching tips and a critical eye to polish up my technique". Sea kayak, short boat, or borrow a surf-specific SOT from Simon.

From Simon:

"Women’s only Surf Skills on Sat 13th December, with mid-day to 1 pm high tide which gives us the option of using Summerleaze Bay. Summerleaze at high tide is sheltered from the worst of the wind when it blows from the south to south west and the breakwater which protects this bay takes out most of the energy from the swell. We have benefitted from this over the last few days and have run some amazing surf skills sessions as a result. Starting at 9.30 am at Crooklets Cafe and running until about 3 pm. Just let me know ASAP if you can make either of these days. Cost is £85."

Hi, my London club (Tower Hamlets Canoe Club) will be coming to Devon for a weekend of white water kayaking on 15/16 November, and they have a few spots (max 3) available for beginners to join their coached group. They'll be staying in a bunkhouse in Princetown Fri-Sun but of course possible to travel up for the days only. It's around £180 for the two days of coaching (and £20 per night for the bunkhouse). Minimum requirements are knowing how to paddle in flat water, being able to pop your spray deck under water, etc. Let me know on here if you're interested and any questions and I can find out the answers.

UPDATE 2
We've lost 6th Nov, but 5th is still available. Let's go for it. Apart from anything else, if it gets cancelled due to extreme weather there will be more time to rearrange it.

UPDATE 1
Ok, so 5 Nov would be possible for Simon, but 6th November would be better as he's away until late on 4th.

Christina says she can do 6th. Most of you said you could do week days with enough notice. Does this work?

To fix a date we need commitment. As long as four confirm, it won't be more than £95 each. I'm ambivalent as I've already booked a December day (colder!) but could probably be persuaded. Or I could also ask in Bideford club.

Please comment, or message me.

ORIGINAL Simon Hammond is running some more surf kayak development days, 27 and 28 November. £85pp/day. I'll be going to both.

29th/30th he's organising more ad hoc surf kayak sessions based around competition techniques. This is not my thing!!

On 1 and 2 Dec he is running women only SEA kayak surf skills days. I'm going on Monday 1st.

More details for all of the above:

https://www.facebook.com/share/1DiBMypub6/

ADDITIONALLY/ALTERNATIVELY If we can get 4 or 5 people together we could arrange a sea kayaks in surf day for the club - any gender. Doesn't have to be a similar date (but before the water really chills can be good). Comment here if that would interest you. I imagine the cost would be similar (not more, anyway). If people are interested I'll follow it up and coordinate.

Simon Hammond (coach and assessor) is looking for two or three paddlers to be led on a leadership assessment day, 10 May, probably Port Quin in Cornwall, or possibly Looe if weather dictates.

This is a good chance to experience an assessment without having to take it (IE if you are working towards one, but not quite ready). It's also a chance for people with slightly less experience to widen their paddling network and have a day out away from ECC usual haunts.

Not suitable for complete beginners: you need to be at the standard where you could usefully participate in an average club sea trip. You may be asked to be part of rescue scenarios and should be prepared to capsize. You also need to arrange your own transport and gear (to use club gear you'll need permission from the rec bosun, and have insurance).

I'll probably go. It's not my assessment btw, though that might come later in the year.

The River Axe Race is a friendly small event for pretty much any paddled craft that can handle a bit of river and estuary. The route starts 5 mi south of Axminster and includes 4 mi of twisting river with very gentle (read: shallow) rapids followed by a final mile of open estuary, finishing at Axmouth harbour in Seaton. There are classes for canoe single or tandem, sea kayak, short kayak, SUP (although note any restrictions on borrowing club SUPs), sit-on kayak, racing kayak, etc. Last year, classes were anything from 1-12 boats and it took about an hour, although SUPs took a bit longer due to the wind blowing in the unhelpful direction.

Entry is £15 on the day or £10 in advance. On the day, you quickly drop your boat and kit at the start and register, then drive to the finish for free parking and a shuttle service back to the top. Afterwards, there are changing facilities/showers, loading at the slipway, and refreshments at the AVCC clubhouse.

Three days paddling, 4,5,6 October.

I've just booked to go on this for my second year. It's a chance to paddle in Anglesey, with coaching, but also just have some fun trips. The trips suit a range of abilities, and the coaches cater to everyone's needs. You can camp, van camp, or book to stay in the Anglesey Outdoors self catering accommodation. This is not the big May sea v kayaking symposium. It's a bit smaller, but the coaching is good. I can't do a May trip and anyway the water is warmer in October! Anyone else interested? Currently 33 places available. £270 for three days, £180 for two (but it's too far to go for two days...).
